Analysis of carbamate and organophosphorus pesticide in agricultural irrigation water by Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry

So far, the ultra-trace concentration of pesticide residues in environmental samples has challenged many analytical techniques, which are used to detect simultaneously organophosphorus and carbamate with various polarities. In this study, the OASIS-HLB column was modified by the reagent 1,8-Dihydroxy-2-(4-sulfophenylazo)naphthalene-3,6-disulfonic to enhance the retention of polar pesticides. Both real irrigation water and distilled water samples were applied to validate the determination method of ten carbamates and thirty-eight organophosphorus pesticides all together using LC-MS. According to the results, the linear interval of the method ranged from 1.0 to 100 µg/L, the detection limit was as low as 5.0 µg/L, the relative standard deviations presented less than 8.0%, and the recoveries were ranging between 60% and 112%. Moreover, in the irrigation water samples which were collected in both dry and rainy seasons in ten stations around the agricultural area, five compounds were found, including fenamiphos, terbufos, aldicarb, propoxur, and methiocarb. In the midst of those sampling areas, the Environmental Impact Quotient Field Use Rating of detected pesticide residues presented a high value - 272 at one station, which indicates a high risk for the surrounding environment as well as the local people’s health.

Comparison of Carbon Footprint, Environment Impact, Efficacy and Benefit–Cost Ratio of Insecticide Resistance Management with Conventional Methods used by Thai Chinese Cabbage Farmers

Aim To evaluate and compare the carbon footprint, efficacy, and benefit-cost ratios of Chinese cabbage grown via insecticide resistance management with two farming methods used by Thai farmers. Background Insecticide usage is currently being reduced by the employment of sustainable products and the promotion of environmentally friendly methods, thereby increasing the income of Chinese cabbage farmers in Thailand. Methods This study aims to evaluate the control of insect pests and marketable produce in Chinese cabbage using various methods. Pests were counted every five days, and the marketable produce was evaluated. Greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impact were estimated using methodologies such as the environmental impact quotient, with the pesticide usage costs and benefit-cost ratios recorded. Results The study compared two farming methods with insecticide resistance management, revealing that in the growing of Chinese cabbage, the latter exhibited lower emissions per acre and kg. However, the environmental impact was higher in methods 1 and 2 due to the increased spray application involved. The insecticide resistance management method was found to effectively control pests and produce marketable produce with less total investment and labour expenses. Conclusion The study analysed the impact of farming practices and pesticide resistance management strategies on the environment and carbon emissions. The results showed that insecticide resistance management is more effective in reducing carbon emissions and positively impacting the environment while also providing a better benefit-cost ratio. However, the study suggests that education and continuous monitoring are required for effective resistance management. The findings also emphasise the need for adaptation to changing pests and the consideration of external factors such as market demand, climate change, and government policies to ensure long-term sustainability.

Assessment of insecticide risk quantification methods: Introducing the Pesticide Risk Tool and its improvements over the Environmental Impact Quotient

Abstract Tools for quantifying nontarget pesticide risks have long been used for documenting the benefits of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. One resource receiving little attention is the Pesticide Risk Tool (PRT), developed by the IPM Institute in Madison, WI. The PRT includes 15 indices and uses a probabilistic approach to assess the risk for the environmental and human health effects of insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides. In this article, we compare the PRT to the Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ) to highlight the PRT’s approach to characterizing risk and several improvements over the EIQ. Comparing the calculated risk scores between the EIQ and PRT shows a similar trend with organophosphate insecticides, usually reflecting the highest toxicity risks, with more pronounced differences for pyrethroids and neonicotinoids, but exact toxicity rankings differ. Advantages of the PRT over the EIQ include the probabilistic approach to quantify risk and reliance on field impact data where available, the use of raw data for inputs versus a scoring system, correction of known issues with the EIQ, and its greater diversity of risk indices. Some disadvantages of the PRT include its lack of data on discontinued products, the absence of a total risk score, use of different scoring scales between indices, and its cost. However, given the pros and cons of each method, we believe the PRT to be a useful tool for researchers, extension professionals, and growers who wish to account for environmental and human health risks when building IPM programs.

Quantifying changes in the environmental impact of in-crop herbicide use in Saskatchewan, Canada

Abstract The sustainable management of herbicides is critical to modern agriculture and the environment. This article examines the evolution and environmental implications of herbicide use in Saskatchewan, Canada, agriculture. It quantifies changes in herbicide use and their environmental impacts by analyzing farm-level herbicide use data from 1991 to 1994 and from 2016 to 2019 through the environmental impact quotient. Results confirm significant reductions in both environmental and toxicological impacts of herbicides used, underlining the pivotal shift from tillage-based weed control to herbicide-resistant cropping systems. The environmental impact of the top five herbicides (glufosinate, glyphosate, clethodim, imazamox, and 2,4-D) used from 2016 to 2019 is 65% lower than that for those herbicides (MCPA, 2,4-D, bromoxynil, diclofop-methyl, and trifluralin) used from 1991 to 1994, with a 45% reduction in the active ingredient applied per acre. Despite increased herbicide use due to more crop acres being seeded, the findings highlight a marked improvement in the sustainability of herbicide use, affirming the importance of technological advancements in agriculture. This research contributes valuable insights into long-term trends in herbicide use, offering a practical framework for informed decisions aligning with sustainable agricultural practices as well as reduced biodiversity impacts.

Externalities of Pesticides and Their Internalization in the Wheat–Maize Cropping System—A Case Study in China’s Northern Plains

When the production or use of a product imposes a cost or benefit on a third party, this is referred to as an externality. Externalities of pesticides are associated with social and environmental costs. However, there is still a lack of a systematic method for evaluating and internalizing the externalities of pesticides. This study utilizes the pesticide’s environmental impact quotient and environmental accounting methods to assess the external costs associated with pesticide usage in the winter-wheat–summer-maize cropping system in China’s northern plains, with a specific focus on the pesticide use in Botou City during the year 2020 as a case study. Additionally, we introduce the concept of the net external value of pesticides and propose a methodology for its internalization, aiming to quantify the external costs induced by pesticide usage and explore the possibility of integrating them into market transactions. The results showed that the total external costs of pesticide use are 423.9 USD ha−1, with a positive external value of 171.9 USD ha−1 and a net external value of −252.0 USD ha−1. The negative external costs associated with pesticide use outweigh the positive external values. External costs varied significantly according to environmental receptors, after retaining two significant figures: applicators accounted for 45% of the total external costs, followed by pickers (32%), consumers (11%), groundwater (4.5%), fish (3.9%), beneficial insects (1.7%), birds (1.3%), and bees (1.1%). The external costs of maize cultivation were 33% higher than those of wheat cultivation. The application of herbicides resulted in the highest external costs compared with fungicides and insecticides. Based on the internalization of the results, imposing an ecological tax on pesticide users is recommended, with rates of 3.29% for wheat and 6.76% for maize. This research contributes to sustainable agricultural development by providing valuable insights for farmers in selecting environmentally friendly pesticides and informing the implementation of ecological taxes on pesticide usage.

A combined approach for the estimation of groundwater leaching potential and environmental impacts of pesticides for agricultural lands

Pesticide pollution can degrade the quality of land, water, and air, and imposes risks on people, flora and fauna. Pesticides are frequently chosen based on their agricultural effectiveness and cost, rather than their potential environmental impacts. The aim of this study is to present a combined approach to estimate the leaching potential and environmental impacts of pesticides for agricultural lands. The pilot study area (PSA) is the agricultural plain of the Lower Aksu Stream Basin in Antalya - Turkey. The groundwater of the agricultural plain contributes to around half of the flow rate of the stream. The first phase of the combined approach involved pesticide monitoring to screen the target pesticides, the second phase involved evaluating the physicochemical properties of the target pesticides and estimating their leaching potential using several indices, and the third phase involved environmental impact analysis of the target pesticides using the Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ) risk indicator. Additionally, Principal Component Analysis was conducted to examine the correlations between physicochemical parameters of pesticides and the leaching potential index results. By the application of the combined approach, 45 target pesticides were identified for the PSA and the indices were consistent to estimate similar leaching potentials for the same pesticides. Moreover, the computed EIQ-Field Use Rates provided valuable information to rank target pesticides according to their environmental impacts on consumer, farmworker and ecology. The applied methodology provided a practical approach to select pesticides with the least leaching potential and environmental impacts to protect water quality and ecosystem health.

ASSESSMENT OF THE HEALTH AND ECOLOGICAL RISKS CAUSED BY FUNGICIDES IN CHRYSANTHEMUM CULTIVATION BY ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT QUOTIENT

This study uses the Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ) to assess the health and ecological risks caused by fungicides used in chrysanthemum cultivation upstream of Xuan Huong Lake, Da Lat city. Survey results reveal that 134 farmers use 21 fungicides with 18 active ingredients on a total area of 35.2 hectares. In all, 18 fungicides with an EIQ at the level of “unlikely to be hazardous” (EIQ < 25) are used on about 95% of the acreage, and 3 fungicides with an EIQ of “slightly hazardous” (25 < EIQ < 50) are used on the rest of the area. The Field Use EIQ of fungicide was rated very low in only 8.2% of the survey area and moderate in 48%. Areas with high and very high ratings account for 3% and 41%, respectively. Using fungicides according to the instructions can reduce the Field Use EIQ values in cultivated areas by 38% and return areas with high and moderate ratings to a low rating. Therefore, it is necessary to instruct farmers on the safe use of fungicides and to recommend those with low EIQ values for chrysanthemum cultivation.

Effect of surrounding landscape on Popillia japonica abundance and their spatial pattern within Wisconsin vineyards.

Landscapes surrounding agroecosystems can provide resources that may benefit insect pests. This project examined the influence of the surrounding landscape on the abundance and spatial pattern of Popillia japonica (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) in vineyards. Twenty vineyards across Southern Wisconsin, spanning a gradient of 5-80% cropland in a 1.5km radius surrounding landscape, were sampled in 2017 and 2018 for P. japonica adults and leaf injury. The distribution of P. japonica and leaf injury was assessed by sampling along a transect at the edge, halfway from the edge to the center, and at the center of each vineyard. The proportion of cropland and pasture in the surrounding landscape along with abiotic factors of temperature, precipitation, longitude, and pesticide use (determined using Environmental Impact Quotient) were included in models to explain the variation of P. japonica abundance and leaf injury. No significant relationship was observed between proportion cropland in the surrounding landscape and P. japonica abundance or leaf injury. Combined effects of pasture, longitude, and temperature best explained variation in the abundance of P. japonica adults while longitude, temperature and EIQ best explained variability in leaf injury. Vineyards with more pastures in the surrounding landscape, located further east, and with higher temperatures, generally had more P. japonica adults and vineyards further east with higher temperature and lower EIQ pesticide use generally had higher levels of leaf injury. Additionally, variability in weekly temperature and precipitation influenced weekly abundance, with higher temperatures and less precipitation resulting in greater weekly abundance of P. japonica adults. Significantly more adult P. japonica and greater leaf injury were found at the edges than in the center of vineyards. Our results suggest beetles from the surrounding landscape likely contribute to populations of P. japonica adults found feeding on vines on vineyard edges, and P. japonica abundance and associated leaf injury are influenced by geographical location, local weather conditions, and pesticide use.

Genetically Modified (GM) Crop Use 1996–2020: Environmental Impacts Associated with Pesticide Use Change

ABSTRACT This paper assesses the environmental impacts associated with changes in pesticide use with GM crops at a global level. The main technologies impacting on pesticide use have been crops modified to be tolerant to specific herbicides so as to facilitate improved weed control and crops resistant to a range of crop insect pests that otherwise damage crops or typically require the application of insecticides to control them. Over the 24 year period examined to 2020, the widespread use of GM insect resistant and herbicide tolerant seed technology has reduced pesticide application by 748.6 million kg (−7.2%) of active ingredient and, as a result, decreased the environmental impact associated with insecticide and herbicide use on these crops (as measured by the indicator, the Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ)) by a larger 17.3% between 1996 and 2020. The technology that has delivered the largest change in pesticide use has been insect resistant cotton, where a 339 million kg of active ingredient saving has occurred and the associated environmental impact (as measured by the EIQ indicator) has fallen by about a third.

Environmental Impact of Pesticide Usage in Cotton

Present days’ use of pesticides has decreased the crop production & post-harvest losses which has contributedremarkably to the food security of the nation, but its adverse effects on human, animals, environment andthe eco-system has been a major issue. The pesticide with the highest Field Environmental Impact Quotient(EIQ) value used by sample farmers was Profenophos i.e., 75.19, and the least Field EIQ value pesticideused by sample farmers was Acetamiprid i.e., 0.19. Average Field use EIQ was calculated for the differenttypes of farmers. It was highest in the case of small farmers i.e., 39.56, followed by large farmers i.e., 38.23.The comparably less Field use EIQ was of medium farmers i.e., 36.83. About Willingness To Pay, 35.83percent of farmers were willing to pay 6-10 percent more price for eco-friendly pesticides than that ofchemical pesticides,whereas 24.16 percent farmers were ready to pay 1-5 percent more price.

Assessing environmental impact of genetically modified seeds in Brazilian agriculture.

Genetically modified (GM) seeds have had relevant impacts on worldwide agriculture, even with a limited number of essential traits launched in the markets. The focus on platforms crops has favored the combination of traditional breeding, GM insertion, and diffusion in agriculture. One of the remarkable features of the GM traits has been the close link with pest and weed control systems. We investigate the environmental effects due to pesticides for two different GM seeds: insect resistant (IR) cotton and herbicide tolerant (HT) soybeans in a particular period of Brazilian agriculture, 2009–2013. We use a dataset on commercial farms' use of pesticides and biotechnology in Brazil to document environmental effects of GM traits. We explore within farm variation for farmers planting conventional and GM seeds to identify the effect of adoption on the environmental impact of pesticides measured as the quantity of active ingredients of chemicals and the Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ) index. The findings show that the IR trait reduces application of insecticides by 22% and the associated environmental impact by 20% the environmental impact of insecticides. However, for HT traits, we find that application of herbicides increases by 55.8% and the associated environmental impact by 44.4%, showing a significant increase in the EIQ. The HT results are driven by an increase of less toxic herbicides elevenfold larger than the decrease in less toxic ones, which we interpret as evidence of weak substitutability between herbicides of different toxicity levels. Addressing what happened in the last decade, the paper also presents a view of the transformations in GM usage in Brazil, focusing on the considerable success in adopting stacked genes. Future perspectives point to a more diversified menu of technologies, crops, and adopting countries, going beyond platform crops and more prominent agriculture exporters.

Pesticides, crop choices and changes in well-being

This study investigates how Pesticide Risk Indicators (PRIs) can be applied to help develop sound economic policies. We modified one of the numerous PRIs proposed over the years, the Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ), originally developed for the fruit industry, to consider co-formulants and adjuvants. The new formula includes three components representing the externalities of farm worker risk, consumer risk, and ecological risk. It also considers the potential externalities of the use of pesticides on residents living near the farms where these products are used. We applied the modified EIQ to two areas located in central Italy (the Chiana Valley in Tuscany and the Tiber and Upper Tiber Valleys in Tuscany/Umbria), surveying a sample of farms to determine the quantity and types of pesticides used on five crops: durum wheat, soft wheat, corn, tobacco, and olives. After calculating the impact quotient, we used data from a survey conducted in a different Italian region regarding the willingness to pay (WTP) for a pesticide-free environment and determined the WTP for even minimal changes in that quotient. Using those results, we simulated the changes in welfare (calculated as changes in willingness to pay) that would result from modifying the amount of land used for each crop. Our findings indicate that the proposed WTP indicator may have broad utility and that its application may lead to enhanced awareness of the consequences of pesticide use in farming. 

Impact of integrated pest management farmer field school programs in the subtropics of Jammu and Kashmir, India

To quantify the long-term impacts of integrated pest management farmer field school (IPM-FFS) program on rice and vegetables in the subtropics of Jammu and Kashmir, we conducted a field study using latitudinal comparison (with vs. without FFS) and cross-sectional longitudinal comparisons. Our results show contrasting use of pesticides by both rice and vegetable farmers in the subtropical region of Jammu. Rice cultivation in the study area was found to be free of insecticides and fungicides. In vegetable crops, IPM-FFS farmers reduced the number of pesticide applications by 7% but used 27.8% higher amounts of pesticide active ingredients resulting in 59% higher field use environmental impact quotient of pesticide use, mainly driven by the higher fungicide use. Over time, the impact of IPM-FFS fleet as the farmers trained 4–8 years before the survey reported significantly higher number of pesticide applications in vegetable crops (by 49%) compared to those trained 1–3 years. We suggest that IPM dissemination should be reoriented for rationalizing pesticide use, as long-term outcomes of reduced pesticide use do not present a positive impact.

Reducing Pesticide Risk Associated With Dollar Spot Management on Golf Course Turfgrass

Pesticides are critical tools for golf course managers to maintain healthy and economically profitable golf course playing surfaces. However, the intensity and types of pesticides used on golf courses can be harmful to human and environmental health. Two separate studies were conducted at two locations in Wisconsin, USA between 2014 and 2020 to test the ability of reduced risk fungicide programs to control dollar spot (Clarireedia spp.) on golf course fairways and putting greens. Risk of the pesticide application programs was quantified in both studies using the active ingredient application rate, the Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ), hazard quotient (HQ), and the Pesticide Risk Tool (PRT). The first study found that using the Smith-Kerns Dollar Spot Prediction Model to schedule fungicide applications did not reduce pesticide risk on its own, but that a pesticide program utilizing reduced risk products was just as effective in controlling dollar spot as a conventional program while reducing pesticide risk by ~50–80% depending on the pesticide risk indicator used. The second study established an average pesticide risk using HQ based on the pesticide records of 23 randomly selected Wisconsin golf courses. This statewide average was then used to test pesticide programs at 100, 75, 50, and 25% of the average risk for their efficacy in controlling dollar spot over a 4-year period. In the 4 years of the study, dollar spot severity of the 25% risk treatment was statistically indistinguishable from the other three programs. Taken together, these results indicate that pesticide risk can be significantly reduced on golf courses in the US Midwest without sacrificing dollar spot control.

Impact of Farmer Field School on Crop Income, Agroecology, and Farmer’s Behavior in Farming: A Case Study on Cumilla District in Bangladesh

The Farmer Field School is a season-long training for farmers involving participatory activities and interactive learning with the doctrine of integrated pest management and agroecosystem analysis. It has become a popular education and extension approach worldwide. This study tried to evaluate the FFS as a vehicle for sustainable agriculture which has economic viability, ecological soundness, and social acceptability. The study aimed to analyze the impact of the FFS on crop income, agroecology, and farmers’ behavior in farming. The empirical models, such as propensity score matching, Mahalanobis distance matching, and difference in differences, were applied for estimating the impact of FFS on crop income, more specifically, real income from brinjal. The environmental impact quotient was used to assess the agroecological impact of using pesticide, and a graded response model was used to investigate farmer behavioral changes in farming. The treatment effect based on the empirical models has shown a positive, significant effect on crop income. The findings also revealed that FFS farmers had a lower agroecological impact from pesticide use, and their behavior in farming practices was improved. Therefore, FFS was demonstrated to be a key strategy in strengthening agricultural extension services, which will contribute to promoting sustainable agriculture.

Impact of insecticide programs on pests, the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis, and staked tomato profitability.

Various insecticides are available to manage diverse pest complexes in commercial vegetable production, but knowledge gaps exist regarding their overall performance in pest suppression, profitability, and compatibility with biological control. We conducted trials in staked tomatoes in western North Carolina in 2017-2018 to compare how different insecticide programs managed key pests and their interactions with Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot, a predator of the twospotted spider mite (TSSM, Tetranychus urticae Koch). Treatments compared no insecticides to broad-spectrum ('hard') foliar applications, selective ('soft') foliar applications, and to chemigation of selective systemic insecticides. Treatment efficacy was based on pest control, net profitability, and Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ) ratings comparing environmental and human health risks. All programs similarly suppressed aphids, while flower thrips and flea beetle populations were low and unaffected by program. Only the 'hard' foliar program suppressed TSSM (including P. persimilis), which quickly rebounded. This program inhibited biological control, and eventual TSSM suppression was likely caused by P. persimilis immigrating from nearby plots. All programs were generally equivalent in reducing fruit damage. Net profits were similar among insecticide programs, which were significantly greater than in untreated plots. Yield and profit trends were similar both years, but impacted by record flooding in 2018. Safer and more selective chemigation and 'soft' foliar programs were as effective and economical as the 'hard' foliar program, while also conserving biological control. These results support existing research demonstrating that improved insecticide use can be integrated with biological control for more profitable and environmentally sustainable vegetable production. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Assessing Potential Environmental Impacts of Pesticide Usage in Paddy Ecosystems: A Case Study in the Deduru Oya River Basin, Sri Lanka.

Rice paddies are unique ecosystems that provide rich wetland habitat. Their enduring existence across vast stretches of land has led them to evolve into unique systems serving a diverse assemblage of organisms and sustaining a staple grain for many people. With food demand rising, agricultural intensification through agrochemical application is a common practice used to boost food production in developing countries, including Sri Lanka. The aim of the present study was to assess the concentration of pesticide residues in water in rice ecosystems and discover their potential impacts on both environmental health and the most common fauna groups across a cropping year in Sri Lanka. A total of 270 water samples from waters associated with paddy fields within a watershed were analyzed for 20 commonly used pesticides; in addition, local farm holders were surveyed to assess pesticide usage details in three selected paddy tracts. We then used the Cornell University environmental impact quotient (EIQ) calculator and the ECOTOX Knowledgebase to determine the exposure risk associated with individual pesticides relative to their application rates and aquatic concentrations. Survey results demonstrate that several pesticides were overapplied at rates 1.2–11 times the recommended application, and the EIQ demonstrated high environmental risk of two of the agrochemicals detected, 2‐methyl‐4‐chlorophenoxyacetic and diazinon. Fish, amphibians, insects, and beetles were found to have a wide range of potential adverse outcomes from exposure to diazinon, captan, thiamethoxam, and chlorantraniliprole. To balance the trade‐offs between food security and ecosystem sustainability, the present study recommends that adoption of quantifiable environmental health indicators be considered as part of the national policy regulating pesticide use. Risk assessment of herbicides compared to other pesticides in Brazil

Abstract The use of herbicides is essential to preserve the productivity and efficiency of crops in land use and growth factors. The general public has questioned the use of herbicides and pesticides, even when used rationally and following the procedures approved by regulatory agencies. It is essential to present accurate information about these products’ use and the risk associated with this use in this context. The mean dose and the Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ) continuously decreased as a function of the year of release of new active ingredients with herbicidal action in Brazil, which indicates that the new products are more efficient and present lower risks to the environment, farmworkers and consumers. The mean EIQ for each herbicide application in soybean, maize, sugarcane, and cotton has decreased in Brazil. The proportion of herbicides in the number of applications has decreased compared to other classes of pesticides, except for cotton. The risk of products decreased over time, with continuous reductions in EIQ values per unit of the treated area; the EIQ values determined per production remained stable despite the increased complexity of pest management, which caused an increase in the number of applications.

A novel framework for estimating and analyzing pesticide risk on golf courses

This study develops a framework that quantifies golf course pesticide risk, explores environmental and economic factors that may be responsible for the observed risk, develops a method to compare golf course pesticide risk to other agricultural crops and investigates how pesticide risk on golf courses can be most effectively reduced. To quantify pesticide risk, we adapt the Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ) and hazard quotient models for use on golf courses. The EIQ model provides an estimate of overall environmental risk, while the hazard quotient model, as applied here, provides an estimate of pesticide risk to mammals. This novel framework was applied to twenty-two courses in Wisconsin and New York, USA. Using both pesticide risk models, all twenty-two golf courses showed a high coefficient of variation of pesticide risk (<0.76). Within a golf course, mean absolute pesticide risk was at least two times higher on fairways than on greens, tees, or roughs. Mean area normalized risk was at least three times higher on greens than the other three golf course components. Pesticide risk of a component-weighted average of greens, tees, fairways and roughs on each course were within the range of pesticide risk calculated for five other agricultural crops. Our data suggest that variation in pesticide risk on golf courses is related to economic factors, such as maintenance budget, and can be effectively lowered by reducing pesticide use on fairways and selecting products of lower risk. To assist golf course superintendents in developing programs that lower pesticide risk, a new metric was developed: the Risk to Intensity Quotient (RIQ). The RIQ is the ratio of pesticide risk to use intensity and quantifies the average risk of product selection by a golf course superintendent.

Management of Termites Through Different Tools and Their Impact on Environment and Soil Micro-arthropods in Sugarcane in Indo-Gangetic Plains of India

Termites, being a major subterranean insect pest of sugarcane, are generally managed through insecticidal applications, although multiple non-chemical options are available. In the present study, attempt was made to evaluate different entomopathogens, insecticides and a cultural method against termites under field condition. Four entomopathogens (Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, Purpureocillium lilacinum and Bacillus subtilis), four insecticides (Chlorantraniliprole, Imidacloprid, Bifenthrin and Chlorpyrifos) and one treatment of cultural practice of weekly irrigation for 4 weeks from planting onwards along with untreated control were evaluated as treatments for the management of termites. Although insecticides were found most effective tools in managing termites in sugarcane, the entomopathogens were also found to be quite successful and surprisingly weekly irrigation failed to check the termite infestation. A significant diversity and abundance of different taxon of micro-arthropods were recorded in different treatments. Environmental impact quotient (EIQ) and EIQ-Field use rating (EIQ-FUR) of different chemical pesticides revealed a significant impact on diversity and abundance of micro-arthropods in sugarcane agro-ecosystem. In order to minimise the use of chemical insecticides, the present study indicates a possibility of integrated approach in managing termites in sugarcane agro-ecosystem.
